Betta Fish Diseases
Fungal Infection
Symptoms: Betta has white patches or areas on its body or head. may not move as much, may have stopped eating, color may be pale.
Tail Rot or Fin Rot
Symptoms: Betta’s fins and/or tail seem to be getting shorter and shorter. Or they seem to be falling apart and or breaking off. There may be a dark or red color on the edge of the betta fish’s fins or tail. He might be still active and eating normally, or may have stopped eating, color may be pale.
Ick
Symptoms: Betta has white dots all over his body and head, even eyes. He may be less active and may have stopped eating. He may also be rapidly darting around and running into rocks, plants and whatever else he can find to scratch himself.
Velvet
Symptoms: Velvet can best be spotted by shining a light on the betta’s body. If the body of the betta apears to be covered in a fine gold or rust then he has velvet. He may also stop eating or scratch against things.
Popeye
Symptoms: Betta’s eye may appear to bulge out in a grotesque way. This can be usually be cured but sometimes results in death of betta. Betta fish may also ne inactive or not eating.
Dropsy
Symptoms: Betta fish will have an enlarged belly or underside. Betta will also have raised gills on its topside. There is no cure for this unfortuantely and if you see dropsy in your betta he will probably die.
Inflamed Gills
Symptoms: One or both gills on the betta may not close all the way or have a red color to them. This is easiest to spot on the top side of the betta
If your betta has one of these diseases and it goes unnoticed, it can greatly shorten your betta’s lifespan or can kill your betta fish all together. Betta fish diseases can be a nightmare for any betta owner but there are many ways to counter-act these diseases or prevent them altogether.
